How to prepare and eat an Artichoke

Our Artichokes are particularly gorgeous this week. Fresh and with lots of ‘meaty’ substance. With the help of WikiHow, here is how to enjoy them.

Do not boil, steam if you can or cook on low as shown in the picture. It isn’t necessary to cut off the ends.

Steam on a low boil for 50 mins. To tell if it’s ready, pull a leaf out. If it comes out easily, it’s cooked. Drain upside down.

Pull leaves off and dip them in any sauce that appeals. They are often dipped in butter; here they are dipped in a cocktail sauce. While some leaves are only meaty on the ends, you can see these leaves are so meaty, you can pull the meat off a large portion of the leaf as you can see by the teeth marks pulling the meat off the leaf.

As you continue eating leaves you will come to much smaller leaves with less meat on them. These can be eaten a few at a time.

You will then reach the choke. Do not eat this.

Slide a knife under the choke to remove it from the heart. There may be some heart on the back of the choke that you can remove and eat.

Dip the heart into your sauce and enjoy. Although it may seem like a lot of work, it’s definitely worth it.
